in burglars Good times for $1m winners Dob to win A Burnside couple’s quiet belief that they would one day win the big prize, proved correct when they won $1 million in a recent Bonus Bonds monthly draw. The lucky couple have held Bonus Bonds since they were children, receiving them from friends and family as birthday presents. They hung onto their Bonus Bonds in the hope they would be the next big winners. The couple were initially apprehensive when they received a call from their ANZ Bank manager asking them to come into their

local branch. Rather than being an issue with their bank accounts as they initially thought, they were told they had won $1 million. “Words cannot really describe the joy and wonderful emotions that ran through our heads. We hugged each other and instantly had smiles so big they almost made our faces hurt,” said the winner, who wants to remain anonymous. The winners have donated a portion of their prize to World Vision and The Salvation Army, and are considering a longer list of charities they would like to support.

The prize has allowed the couple to pay off their sizeable mortgage and buy a new car for the first time. Next on the list are plans for overseas travel and are looking at exploring Europe and the United States. “Normally when you’re looking at overseas travel, you’re looking at the price, but now we can look at the places we’ve always wanted to go to. “Winning the Bonus Bonds first prize has been a life-changing event. One moment your options for the future may seem

limited and then a split second later, the possibilities are almost endless.” Their ANZ branch has provided support and advice to help the couple to manage their winnings. “They’ve assisted us to achieve some of our initial short-term goals and have provided us with sound advice enabling us to plan for the future.” To date, the youngest Bonus Bond holder to win $1 million was just seven-years-old and the oldest was 92.

The Lamingtons rock on in band contest MADE IT: Middleton Grange School band, The Lamingtons, were among 10 bands to make it through to the Canterbury regional finals of Smokefreerockquest this month. The Sock Monkeys from Christchurch Boys’ High School, The Burnside High School Funk Band from Burnside High School and The Therapy from Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery also made it through. The heats were held at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School last weekend. The Canterbury regional final will be held on June 26 at the Isaac Theatre Royal. The top two bands will then be selected to go into the national finalists judging pool; and the top two solo/duos play off for first and second place, with both going into the judging pool for the national final.

$100 bar tab BY KYLE KNOWLES A $100 bar tab is up for grabs for anyone who can identify the burglars who broke into O’Sheas Public House in Shirley. A safe containing more than $500 was taken from the Marshland Rd bar about 7am on Saturday, May 23. Owner Alan Stroud has offered the bar tab as an incentive to catch the offenders. He believes the offenders had probably been patrons in the bar because they went straight to where the safe was. A photo from security camera footage of one of the burglars has been posted on Facebook (www.Facebook. com/Pages/Osheas-Public-House). They broke their way in through the back door using a crowbar then made off with the safe containing the bar’s social club’s funds. He said the burglars did not trip the alarm until they were leaving with the safe in hand, but had no idea how they were going to open it. Social club member Vicky Buller said it was disappointing but could have been a lot worse as more than $1000 was in the safe a couple of weeks ago. This has prompted the social club to be more vigilante with its funds and use online banking more frequently. If anyone knows who the burglars are and to claim the bar tab, phone O’Sheas on 385 3080 or the police on 363 7400.

Reporter Bridget Rutherford spoke to her about the role, the central city site’s new street art museum, and the organisation’s plans for the future. So Josie, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well I have three children aged 3, 8 and 11 and I’m married. I came to Christchurch in 1991 from Auckland and I went to university and studied art history and law. I worked for an organisation called Pillars which supports children and families of prisoners. I did that for a few years and really enjoyed it, I became passionate about youth work and that led me to join the police. I was in the police force for three years but it wasn’t quite me in the end. I became the manager at YMCA Wainui Park out near Akaroa. I ran that camp for eight years, it was where I met my husband. I became chief executive in 2008 so its coming up seven years. Where in the city are you from? I live in Cashmere, so up on the hill. Why did you decide to study in

Christchurch? My older brother and older sister had both come to Canterbury. We grew up in Auckland and both our parents worked at Auckland University and you don’t go to the university that your parents work at. We’re a family which really enjoys the outdoors and mountains, and there were lots of skiing and tramping here. It has been a real passion for us. And I love Christchurch, it’s home. When you first started working at the YMCA, did you ever think you would become chief executive? I never thought in a million years that would happen. When I left high school I was going to run my own art gallery, and then I was going to be a lawyer and then I was a cop. It was the obvious progression. I think I’m quite good at having a vision so it’s a good job for me. There is a huge amount of variety. What would your average day look like in the role? There is a lot of talking to staff, we have a senior executive team which oversees our programmes. I work with them, so they feel supported and so they have the

resources they need. There is also a lot of talking to people outside YMCA, so at the moment I am on my way to speak at a conference. We have such a wide variety of things going on at the YMCA. There are lots of strategy stuff and financial stuff and fundraising sort of things. I often create busyness for myself because I come up with a lot of ideas and want to do them all. The very first time I got involved with YMCA, I was six or seven-years-old at YMCA camp. They have a very clever pathway for people like me. A pathway which means you can stay involved your whole life, I’m living proof of that. I was only 16 when I came to Christchurch. I also had three years overseas and I walked into every YMCA I saw. I like seeing kids achieve stuff, it’s a really fantastic organisation in that regard. It sounds quite selfish, but in becoming chief executive meant I could start things that I wanted to do. We have an annual talent quest and it’s just because I always wanted to run one. What sort of role does the YMCA play in Christchurch? The YMCA in Christchurch, especially after the quakes is playing a role in trying to fill gaps and building community strength. We have health and fitness, camps, pre-schools, accommodation and the list goes on. We do a lot of gap filling.

HAREWOOD Two HomeS—one Superb Garden SeTTinG A combination seldom found. A quality family home with equally impressive 1 dble bedroom retirement bungalow. Each home has its own internal garaging for a total of 3 vehicles, rooms for additional vehicles including caravans, boats etc. Homes are beautifully positioned to maximise enjoyment of the colourful 1200m² section. Relaxing, BBQing, gardening in your own veggie plot & picking your own fruit are just some of the benefits. Enjoy your pets either at home or in the Styx Mill Reserve down the road. Easy connecting to north/ south highways. A choice of Northwood, Northlands or Bishopdale Mall just a few minutes drive. stay at the YMCA If you fill a jar with rocks, and then you add some bigger rocks and then some sand, we’re sort of the sand. Staff are encouraged to ask what can the YMCA do to help, we might provide a room for a meeting, or something bigger. And you host a lot of backpackers don’t you? We’ve had a lot more backpackers since the quakes because a lot of hostels got wrecked, but hostels aren’t our core business. It is mostly run for families, school groups and business travellers. How is the rebuild going? We’ve got five sites around Christchurch. Our main site is in the central city. After the earthquake it was in the cordoned area, it took us around six months to reopen. And in terms of what we’ve been working on since, attached to accommodation there was a big climbing wall it had been there for 30 years. YMCA bought The Roxx and we bought that so we could close our one. The room was as big as a basketball stadium and other than the climbing it didn’t have a lot of purpose. It is on prime real estate and I thought to myself there’s got to be something more worthwhile for the space in terms of numbers coming. I talked to George Shaw, our now creative director, and before long we were going to turn the stadium into a museum of street art. We hosted the Spectrum Street Art Festival recently and we had

TRANSFORMATION: The old rock climbing wall in the Hereford St building has made way for a new street art museum. 60,000 people come through it. We are also planning on turning that into a permanent thing and also a community theatre. We’re building a 200-seat theatre, it’s quite exciting. Was it a difficult decision to take down the climbing wall which had been a fixture for a long time? Of course it was. It broke the hearts of a number of the climbers and staff. If we hadn’t been able to buy The Roxx, it would have been a lot harder for me, but we weren’t taking away the premise, we were just shifting it. When we were taking it down I was thinking ‘oh have we done the right thing?’ but I’m really pleased to say sometimes when you follow

your gut you’re right. It’s opened up to a whole new world, now it’s an art scene as much as it is a health and fitness place. Do you think you would have gone down that path if the earthquakes had not happened? That’s a good question, we probably still would have bought The Roxx. But we may not have met George, who came to Christchurch from Nelson to help with the rebuild. We might have been doing something else with our stadium. But everything happens for a reason. John Key even came to look at Spectrum. There has been a whole shift from a real conservative Christchurch. What stage is the theatre at currently?

We’re in the process at the moment with final designs and paper work. I’m hoping that we will start the build around April next year. Are there any other projects on the go? We’re also working on putting an indoor swimming pool. Here’s another gap, places for children to learn to swim without lots of barriers in the way. The Centennial Pool is gone and the new metropolitan facility is quite far away. We’re looking at putting a 25m learn-to-swim pool plus a smaller pool for toddlers. We are hoping to make a start on that next year as well but the stadium and theatre is the first priority. How does the art space work?

George decides who does what and artists literally spray the paint straight onto the wall. Then we will paint over it and more people will come in. Some struggle with that. John Key did a tag on the wall, and Nicky Wagner was there. The next day I saw her and she said ‘I can’t wait to bring people in to see his tag’ but too bad it had been painted over and that’s quite cool. What do you think is the best part about your role? The best part is it’s really community focused and we have great staff and resources to try and make a difference. What do you like doing when you are not working? Well I’ve got three children so I’m pretty busy with that. I also do ballet, it’s my midlife crisis thing, I’m in ballet shows and I do ballet exams. My classmates on average are about 17-years-old, I’m older than the teacher. I just really enjoy it for the music and the fitness and it’s such a team thing, you have to be in sync with one another. Do you have a lot of people singing and dancing to YMCA by Village People when they come past? Yes all the time. My office is on the ground floor on Hereford St and people always walk past and I hear them singing it. If I am working at night I can hear it as well, if people have had a few drinks then it is often louder.

Leave power lines alone – they will bite BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICE

The last week has seen the end of the balmy nor’westers and a polar blast that more than hints at the winter to come. Because of the strong southerly, our troops attended a number of incidents where power or telephone lines had been dislodged. A word of warning here. Telephone lines won’t bite. Power lines will. Savagely. Please treat any downed lines as live until they are pronounced dead by the attending power authority. Even then, unless life and limb are in danger there should be no reason to touch them. Leave it to the experts. A deep fat fryer going on fire in a cafe at the airport last Monday set off two sprinkler heads and caused the evacuation of the terminal. This is another good example of the difference sprinklers can make in both extinguishing fire and allowing normal service to recommence. From the time the fire occurred until the staff were allowed back in was 40 minutes. Fire crews remained after this time helping to clean up. But just imagine the extent of fire damage and the time before the building could be reoccupied without those sprinklers.

Papanui’s Past

Skating gains traction in Papanui during late 1880s COMPILED BY CHRISTINE GRANT Roller skating is a sport or pastime that has come and gone from fashion over the years. The word ‘skate’ is of, “Norwegian origin and the custom prevails to a great extent both in Norway and Sweden. So people skate during the summer on smooth boards, wearing rollers attached to their skates to keep themselves in practice until the winter sets in.” The first skating rink in Christchurch opened by Richard Wildblood Kohler (Dick) in 1867, was on the north side of Gloucester St between Oxford Tce and Colombo St. This was known as Coker’s Hall and after the January opening, it was reported that “the skaters wear clogs, beneath which are fixed wooden rollers; on them they roll or skate about the floor of the hall.” Rinking as it was popularly known was slow to gain a lot of interest until the mid-1880s. In the winter of 1884, the Christchurch Skating Club was formed when Queen’s Rink was opened in the Tuam St hall where the Addington Band played at night.

This rink proved popular and in August 1884 it was advertised that a rink at Papanui would be opening shortly. However, it wasn’t until the June 25, 1888 that The Star reported, “the mania for rinking has reached the suburb of Papanui where

around the city. On September 21, 1888 a one mile race was held at the Columbia Rink between the Papanui champion, Charles Langdon and George Fisher of the Columbia rink. The race was won by Fisher with a time of 4min 18sec. Later that month a Three Mile Championship was held, and roller polo became popular between the different rinks. In October 1900 the Papanui Town Hall was destroyed by fire, and it is uncertain where, or if, skating continued in Papanui after that. When the Memorial Hall opened in 1923 this became the new home of skating in Papanui. “Rinking” has come a long way since the days of wooden rollers attached to clogs. Steel wheels on a frame that clamped onto shoes later became popular for outdoor skating and with rubber wheels for indoors. These were followed by specially designed boots with the skates attached for the more advanced skater for competition and artistic skating. These have all led to the ‘inline’ skate that is so popular today.

the Town Hall was opened last evening as a rink.” About the same time rinks were opened at Kaiapoi and Prebbleton. The Tuam St hall was now The Columbia Elite Roller Skating Rink and other rinks were popping up all

Dom’s big year ahead BY KYLE KNOWLES

Burnside’s Dom Newman has been named in three representative hockey teams in the space of a week. First he was named in the Canterbury Cavaliers training squad, then he was named in the Future and Junior Black Sticks squads for their upcoming assignments. The 18-year-old said he was excited to be named in the teams and had to keep going back to the email to check it really was his name on the list. The good news come off the back of Newman being on the New Zealand team which played at the Youth Olympics in China last year. He said it was amazing to be part of a tournament that resembled something like a full Olympics. “It’s sort of what you expect but to be in China, it was ramped up even more and the atmosphere was crazy in a big stadium.” The former Christ’s College student is studying landscape architecture at Lincoln University and has aspirations to reach the Olympics, but first wants to make the full Canterbury squad. “At the moment my short-term goal is to make the Cavs NHL side then progressing to the Junior World Cup next year which I was just named in.”

CRUNCH: Dom Newman and his Indian opponent clash while playing for the Junior Black Sticks. Longer term he said the Olympics was a big motivator. “I think the Olympics are just so different, it’s not a world cup it is different. Going to the youth ones gave me a small taste and now I want to know what the real thing is like.” Newman is joined by two other Cantabrians Sam Lane and David Brydon. Newman said it was really nice to have those two alongside him in the national teams in

particular Brydon. It is really good. David and I came up through the ages together; it is pretty weird we have pretty much been together on every tour I’ve been on.” He said the two have been playing with and against each other ever since he took up the sport in primary school. Newman started out playing rugby as a youngster but switched to hockey in primary school and has stuck with it through the

years to now having represented his country at age grade level. One of the perks of being named in these squads is travelling the world, which Newman says is something he would not have been able to do if it was not for hockey. He said it was good to be able to go to all these places but it was a team effort, and his family had invested a lot of time and money to help him make these sides and get him overseas. While he has been noticed at national level, Newman has also had a strong start for his club side, Carlton Redcliffs. After five rounds, he was second on the top goal scorers’ list with seven and the team was at the top of the ladder. The future Black Sticks will play in the invitational tournament in Breda, Netherlands from July 18-25, with pool play opponents in the form of Pakistan, India, Belgium, Germany, England and the Netherlands. Two Canterbury players were also named in the women’s Future Black Sticks squad. Charlotte Symes and Phoebe Steele will suit up in the squad which play at the same tournament in the Netherlands. They will go up against England, Netherlands, Germany, India and China during round robin play.

Decathlete selected for university games BY KYLE KNOWLES Jack Henry is following in his parents’ rather large footsteps. Karen and Peter Henry competed in Commonwealth Games, Karen in the heptathlon at Brisbane in 1982 and Peter in the decathlon at Auckland in 1990. Peter also represented New Zealand at two winter Olympic Games in the bobsleigh. Jack (right), 21, will now be competing on the world stage himself after being named in New Zealand’s World University Games team where he will line up in the decathlon. Henry, a former head boy at Shirley Boys’ High School said it was more of a relief to be named in the squad than excitement. “That was the main goal this season, to be selected in that team, which was really encouraging.” He said having both his

parents in his corner was a real positive. “I chose to do athletics which is their passion and my passion too, so they are rapt they can help out with my development and reach my full potential, it’s a great combination.” Days after being named in that squad, Henry was also named Athletics Canterbury’s combined events athlete of the year which his father won when he was still competing. “It was really cool to win that award. I think it is the first son and parent duo to win the prize, dad won it back in his day for the same event and mum must of won so it was really special.” This year, the games are being held in South Korea in a stadium that can hold more than 40,000 people. “The largest capacity stadium I have competed in would probably be QE II to be honest, so it will be really cool to compete in front of a big crowd,” he said. The biggest competition he has lined up at was the Australian national championships earlier this year where he finished

fourth overall in the decathlon. He was only 170 points behind New Zealand’s leading decathlete, Brent Newdick. “Being that close to him is very positive,” he said. “This is my first year in seniors with higher hurdles and heavier instruments so it is encouraging to be that close to Brent.” Newdick will be heading to the athletics world championships in China later this year and is something Henry has set his sight on in two years’ time. “World championships in 2017 is the next goal, then I would want to be competitive at the next Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast then on to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.” The games run from July 4-13 and Henry joins five other athletes from Christchurch on the team. They are Angela Petty, Rosa Flanagan, Daniel Balchin, Brad Mathas and Kelsey Berryman. Berryman, Mathas and another athlete who has almost qualified for the team, Fiona Morris, all compete for the same club as Henry, Old Boys United.

GRASSROOTS SPORT Cotswold School cross-country er postponed their races. The junior course included traditional cross-country running as well as jumping over obstacles, such as hay bales and hurdles to make the race a bit more interesting.

Cotswold held its school crosscountry recently with all pupils having a go in one of the three events. Nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the senior children as they lined up in their house colours ready to participate in their races. For those less inclined to run, a race walk over 750m had been developed. There was also a 1km and a 2km race. The children ran around the school grounds having practised the different courses over the weeks leading up to the day. The 2km children also ran outside the school and around the block to ensure the course was long enough and varied for a longer race. Pupils and staff really enjoyed the day seeing personal bests being achieved and great cheering for their classmates being demonstrated. Jersey Pekepo said: “My goal was to lead from the front and I achieved my goal.” Benj Arias said he enjoyed finishing the cross-country but was really puffed after racing in the 1km event. Jonty Liken said: “I really enjoyed running and I think I came ninth. I didn’t stop at all – just ran the 1km.” The junior school children had to wait a week for their cross-country as the wet weath-

Relief for migraine sufferers

A

lthough most of us may have an occasional headache, for others, chronic headaches and migraines can be an extremely painful and debilitating weekly or even daily reality. The two directors at Muscle People Physiotherapy, Laurie Moore and Clare Brandrick, have trained in the Watson Headache Approach, an innovative and effective technique which can offer relief to Christchurch’s migraine sufferers. Those most likely to benefit from this unique approach may have headaches that are one sided or move from one side to the other; or if it starts on one side and spreads, then it is likely that the problems lie in the top three segments of the neck. If you suffer from symptoms similar to these, the Watson Headache Approach may be for you. Physiotherapist Clare Brandrick has been

experiencing excellent results with her patients. Jane Clark took her two children to see Clare and had this to say, “We were very, very impressed. Clare had a really good understanding of patients’ needs. After three months of bouncing between different physiotherapists and specialists, we found that after five minutes with Clare, the problem was pretty much solved.” Physiotherapist Laurie Moore explains that the technique involves mobilising the top three neck segments in a systematic way to find the cause of the migraines, and then use the Watson Headache Approach to decrease their frequency. Clare and Laurie encourage their patients to continue with their current medication but, Laurie says, “As the treatment works and their headaches or migraines become less frequent, I want to see that they don’t have to reach for their medications as often as before.” Also, people

who have specific triggers for headaches, such as chocolate, hormones or red wine, are encouraged to come for an assessment “as we’ve had success with treating those headaches too,” says Laurie. The Watson Headache Approach does not involve cracking of the neck, but gently stressing the appropriate spinal segments in a sustained, persuasive manner. “If you think this technique might help you, but aren’t sure, give us a call,” Clare says. Call Muscle People Physiotherapy’s city clinic on 961 0236 or the Bishopdale clinic on 360 3606 to see if the Watson Headache Approach could help you. Both clinics offer free patient parking.

t JNBY in Merivale, luxurious cardigans and tops in beautiful merino and cashmere are not only gorgeous, but practical for the season. Soft draping, flattering outlines and a choice of lengths from waist to below the knee dresses are key, and JNBY’s stylist’s advice is that the coolest hue this winter is grey in any shade. Slate and dove, ash and pearl all bring a stylish subtlety to an outfit. Their recommendation is to complement them with black and silver accessories to complete the outfit.

The best thing about the cold winter months is snuggling up in some of the wonderful, warm knitwear that is available at this time of year.

Mix and match tops with shimmering pants, floaty skirts and combine with a pop of vibrant yellow or chartreuse to remind us that summer is never really that far away. Neutural tones are a delicate yet classic choice, but JNBY’s usual flair means that their garments are never boring. Mix and match tops with shimmering pants, floaty skirts and combine with a pop of vibrant yellow or chartreuse to remind us that summer is never really that far away. Their Autumn/Winter 2015 collection adds a chic twist to warm winter coats by incorporating panels of different colours, shades or fabrics, making a garment as interesting from behind as in front. Unfussy silhouettes, dropped shoulders and soft

lapels are key looks for coats, some in rich blues which add an extra dimension. There is a return to a more androgynous look so garments are looser and easier to wear. It makes layering simple and perfect for changeable weather and moving from indoors to out. Busting some health myths US medical expert sets the record straight about long-held beliefs

Separating fact from fiction can be difficult, especially when it comes to information about your health. Cutting through the internet clutter and opinions from friends to uncover the truth is key to keeping the mind and body well. Dr Jennifer Johnson, naturopathic doctor at Bastyr University School of Naturopathic Medicine in Washington, offers her expert insight into five of the most common health myths. 1. Omega-3 fatty acids increase the risk of prostate cancer A new study does not support the reported association between omega-3 fatty acids and the risk of prostate cancer put forth by a widely publicised 2013 study. The new study, at goo.gl/ mwKSMM, reaffirms that men can safely consume omega-3 fatty acids from dietary sources, or from supplements. “Omega-3 fatty acids are vital to our health. They lower inflammation, reduce risk of developing cardiovascular disease, lower triglycerides and blood pressure, and have overall positive effects on immune and brain function. The recent meta-analysis with respect to prostate health and fish oil does in fact show that men who take

fish oil... are at no increased risk for prostate cancer.” Johnson stresses there is no known mechanism by which omega-3 fatty acids would increase the risk of prostate cancer, while there is research suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids might inhibit prostate cancer cell growth. 2. Vitamin C prevents the common cold If you reach for a bottle of vitamin C at the first sign of a cold this is a good choice as vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that boosts the immune system to fight off infection when you are sick. However, although vitamin C is a good option for treating a cold, it does not work to prevent colds before onset. “Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the length of colds and can help treat symptoms,” says Johnson. “Though beneficial and quite safe, vitamin C has not been found to consistently prevent colds. If you do start to feel the sniffles, supplement with 500 to 1000mg a day.” 3. Everyone should take a multivitamin each day Vitamins and minerals play a vital role in the normal functioning of our bodies, from skin and bone development, to brain and

the body and has been shown to support immune function and improve mood,” says Johnson. “Studies show that this ‘sunny vitamin’ may also help to prevent cancer.” When the skin is directly exposed to sunlight, vitamin D synthesis begins, explains Johnson. For enough vitamin D to be produced, the skin would have to be in direct sunlight most days for 20 minutes, which most people do not experience consistently. “Supplements are a good option for getting adequate vitamin D, but check with your doctor for proper dosage. I suggest the natural vitamin D3 form,” says Johnson. 5. An apple a day keeps the doctor away Apples are a good source of antioxidants and beta-carotene, which are beneficial for overall health. They are also rich in fibre, which promotes gut health. But apples NOTHING TO SNEEZE AT: Vitamin C can help treat a cold, but it does not are just one of many effective ways prevent the onset of one, studies show. to fend off a visit to the doctor. “First, sleeping enough sets the ommendation that is just right for heart function. ADVANCED OMEGA-PC FISH OIL

t is well-known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with higher amounts of omega-3 in diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Fish oil supplements have become hugely popular for this reason. Until now, most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form, but until recently, the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new

Not all first aid certificates are created equal

F

irst aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority standards to be certified, but not all training providers deliver the same course. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a fact sheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper w o r k p l a c e assessments and meet health and Raewyn Clegg safety obligations. Registered Teacher of Employers should Piano and Theory of check to see the first aid course is relevant Music. to their particular 29 Lancewood Drive industry risks. falling, or medium to high injury, then take care in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment First aid training must cover the outcome of the NZQA first aid unit standard being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. NZ Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red

Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. The requirement allows for a three-month grace

period, so the cut off period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training ensures the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. Best practice in thinking?

T

he idea that some styles of thinking are more helpful for us than others is not new, but the challenge has always been deciding which thinking style we should cultivate. Neuro-Linguistic Psychology (NLP) is a branch of psychology which has approached this age-old conundrum from a new perspective, by focusing on successful individuals then examining the thinking styles that have produced their successful behaviour. In the late 1970s in the United States, the Vietnam War was over and the veterans were returning home. One of the biggest issues was dealing with the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) many veterans were experiencing. The story goes that a group of

NLP researchers studied veterans who had successfully recovered (of their own accord) from PTSD and the researchers were able to identify the thinking style or cognitive processes which had resulted in the veterans’ recovery. These cognitive processes have been distilled and are taught all around the world to successfully resolve trauma. NLP has continued to study and codify the cognitive processes underpinning many successful behaviours. Ali Scott runs An Introduction to NLP: The Habits of Happiness, teaching a range of NLP skills, including instant calm, optimistic-thinking styles, constructive self-talk and utilising negative emotions. enrol now for Semester 2 PERSONALISED ADVICE AT SIT’S HORNBY CAMPUS Fiona Jenkin runs her own business: “As an image coach, I provide personalised advice to my clients to help them be proactive about their appearance to meet their personal image goals.

A

re you still wanting to undertake training or a course this year but missed the beginning of the year intakes? We still have courses at the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT ) Christchurch available: Certificate in Construction (Level 3) covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills. Every class builds a house from scratch; practical sessions are alternated with classroom learning. Classes are three days per week for 40 weeks. Students work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which help them get through their apprenticeship faster. Our Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) would suit someone who likes to work with their hands and enjoys problem solving. Students learn basic engineering skills and how engines, gear boxes, differentials and brakes work. Our training is a prerequisite for starting apprenticeships in automotive engineering, heavy equipment, automotive electrical engineering, automotive machining and motorcycle engineering. Enrolments are being accepted now for this 40-week course. The National Certificate in Project Management (Level 4) and National Diploma in Project Management (Level 5) use blended delivery, so students study both online and through fortnightly workshops and is very suitable for people with busy schedules. Level 4 ensures the skills and knowledge needed to become a project manager. People awarded with this qualification have demonstrated they have contributed to the management of projects, including the management of a

straightforward project or a section of a larger project and working with others in a project team. Level 5 recognises the skills and knowledge of a project manager. People awarded with this qualification have demonstrated they have taken responsibility for managing projects, including managing the work of others within a team. The qualification structure recognises the diversity of contexts to which project management competencies are applied. To find out more, come along to our Open Evening, Tuesday, June 9 from 5pm to 7pm, 60 Waterloo Road, Hornby. Alternatively, you can call us on 0800 TO STUDY (0800 867 883) or check out our website www.sit.ac.nz.

I

have learned that often, just changing the clothes, sometimes, isn’t enough; women have to feel beautiful from the inside out, which means looking after their skin, as well as their wardrobes. Completing the Certificate in Beauty Skills (introductory) was a valuable update from my initial training in image, and has been very valuable to me in being able to offer help to my clients with confidence. I am a hands-on learner and love how this course gave me the opportunity to learn the information straight from a highly professional and experienced tutor, in a program which fitted easily into my busy schedule. The information and tools we were provided with exceeded my expectations,

xceeding customer’s needs and expectations is key to the ongoing success of Stack Electrical, with a 24-hour service scheme and a free no-obligation quotes. No job is too big or too small from repairing a faulty light to a major commercial installation. As the agent for the iconic New Zealand Fujitsu Heat Pump range, the team at Stack Electrical are kept busy installing and servicing their top of the range heat pumps from high wall to low wall and ducted systems. Heat pumps can provide a drier, warmer environment and a cost-effective way of heating your home, says owner Allan Stack. Established by Allan and his wife Judy Stack in 1984, Stack Electrical has grown to employ a staff of 18, installing anything electrical from heating and lights to heavy industrial equipment and maintaining fuel tanks. For the residential market, Stack Electrical also installs underfloor and indoor heating, mirror demisters and towel driers that can be connected to a 24-hour timer to save on electricity costs. Hazardous area work makes up a large proportion of the business, with the company working for a number of fuel and LPG suppliers across the city, and where Allan is a registered electrical inspector. properties which suffer from poor or no insulation. In Canterbury, especially postquake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp, which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house everyday, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber-floored home. Adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. The team have noticed recently that many owners of properties, which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626 for more information.

Talk to the experts

ost people are aware that heat pumps are the most costeffective and convenient solution, but how do you make sure you get the right one for you? Let’s face it, every manufacturer has a multitude of constantly updating/changing models on offer. Plus, New Zealand homes tend to be very individual in size, shape and location, which greatly affects heating and performance requirements. There are three essential steps to ensure you get the right solution for your home: • Get the right size. This requires accurate measurement of the volume of the air to be heated in your property and an understanding of heat loss and air

P

flow characteristics. • Get the right model. What was right for your neighbour might not be right for you. Heat pumps are constantly changing and being improved. • Get it installed correctly. If a heat pump is not installed correctly, it will not function at its rated output, may fail prematurely and void the warranty. Talk to a company that knows about all the brands and can give impartial expert advice. Heat Pump Guys are independent dealers and are accredited for all major brands: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Daikin, Hitachi, LG and so on. They have an obligation free home appraisal service. Give them a call on 0800 474 897 or visit www.heatpumpguys.co.nz.

The importance of air quality The quality of the air we breathe affects our health and ability to perform.

W

e breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air everyday. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however, as winter approaches, we start to shut out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. Ventilation includes both the exchange of air outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, while humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not

effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store, but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

The Canterbury Singers have a concert coming up next weekend that covers everything from Rodgers & Hammerstein through to The Beatles and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

A mixed choir of all ages, the Canterbury Singers perform two public concerts a year. They also take part in the community choir festival and other community entertainment. Their repertoire sweeps a great variety of music - serious, light and popular. The Canterbury Singers perform ‘We're Gonna Put on a Show' in the Avonhead School Hall, Avonhead Road, at 2.15pm, Sunday 7th June. Tickets at the door. Adults $15, Children under 10 Free. Also appearing at the Avonhead School Hall this month is

the Risingholme Orchestra.

The orchestra is made up of a mix of ages and professions who come together for the joy of playing music together. With several public concerts each year, the orchestra has a sense of purpose about their rehearsals which are the highlight of the week for many members – with friendships, a common purpose, playing music together and having fun making for a happy occasion each week. “For this concert we will be performing Beethoven's dramatic Overture to Coriolanus, some sublime ballet music from Gounod's Faust, the rousing Eric Coates' Dambusters Overture and A Tribute to Henry Mancini,” said Helen Reddecliffe. “We also welcome Riley Payne to perform Neruda's Classical Trumpet Concerto for Trumpet and Strings. Riley is currently a year 13 student at Cashmere High School where he is an active leader of the trumpet section in a number of groups and is also co-principal of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. We warmly invite you to a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.” Risingholme Orchestra, 2.30pm Sunday 28 June, Avonhead School Hall, Avonhead Rd.
